Inbreeding of cattle in Puno, Peru has presented several issues to the local mining community including abnormalities in their livestock. Cattle represent over 50% of the livestock in Puno. The Swiss Brown breed was recently introduced as a new breed because of its high tolerance to altitude and has resulted in a marked improvement with their milk production, however, over the years the inbreeding of this livestock has again decreased this production substantially.
By providing two new bulls genetically unrelated to any cattle in the surrounding community to use for semen donations, we intend to create a new gene pool. We plan to sponsor a program of artificial insemination to enhance the local breeds. A new bullpen will be built at the mine to support this program with a couple of cows to also provide fresh milk to the mine.
The increase in milk production will also help fight the anemia problem experienced in these communities.
